Unconfirmed: check with the funder

We couldn’t confirm these on an official page. Treat them as open questions, not facts.

  • ?Whether a brand-new school with no track record can apply

How to apply

  1. Step 1: Check that both your organization and the project site are inside the PEC service area
  2. Step 2: Get your IRS determination letter as a PDF
  3. Step 3: Get bids or quotes for the project and list all funding sources
  4. Step 4: Apply online on the PEC Community Grants page by November 3, 2026

Funders change their requirements. Check the official page before you apply. Getting ready? See what funders usually ask for.

Who can apply

“An organization must have a nonprofit status, either 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4), to be eligible to apply.”
In the funder’s own words, from mypec.com, checked Oct 14, 2026.

The project must be a capital improvement (building repairs, lighting, HVAC, solar) or energy-efficiency equipment, located in the PEC service area or a community surrounded by it. A group that gets 51% or more of its money from taxing entities can't apply (this mainly rules out public districts). Projects must be finished within 12 months. Past winners sit out one cycle. Church facilities limited to church members, and projects that only serve religious purposes, are excluded.

  • 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) with an IRS determination letter (a Texas sales tax exemption letter does not count)
  • Texas nonprofit in good standing with the Texas Secretary of State and Texas Comptroller
  • Less than 51% of funding from taxing entities
  • Project located in the PEC service area or a community surrounded by it
  • Capital improvement or energy-efficiency equipment only; no operating costs, scholarships or ongoing programs
  • Both the organization and the project must be in the PEC service area or a community surrounded by it
  • Project finished within 12 months of the award; partial-funding requests need a total budget plan
  • Past grantees sit out one application cycle

Timing

Applications are open now and due November 3, 2026. Winners are announced in January.
