Unconfirmed: check with the funder

We couldn’t confirm these on an official page. Treat them as open questions, not facts.

  • ?Exact April 2027 dates are not posted yet.
  • ?Whether a microschool that is not in the NCES Private School Survey can apply as a 501(c)(3) instead (the page lists both types, but doesn't say how schools are handled).

What to do now

  1. Step 1: Look up your school's NCES number (private schools get one through the federal Private School Survey)
  2. Step 2: Pick a program that fits a Target focus area
  3. Step 3: Apply in the April 2027 window (Cycle 1)

Funders change their requirements. Check the official page before you apply. Getting ready? See what funders usually ask for.

Who can apply

“All K-12 public or nonprofit private schools, charter schools, community/junior colleges, state/private colleges, or universities. Institutions must have a National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) number.”
In the funder’s own words, from corporate.target.com, checked Oct 10, 2026.

A school without an NCES number can still apply as a 501(c)(3) public charity, which the page lists as a separate eligible type. Target favors programs in four focus areas: basic needs and youth development, community and green spaces, cultural and creative programs, and workforce development. Up to 10 applications per organization at a time.

  • Nonprofit private school with an NCES number, or a 501(c)(3) public charity
  • Program fits one of Target's four focus areas
  • Near a Target store or distribution center (local leaders decide)

Timing

Two windows a year. In 2026: April 6 to May 6 (decisions July) and August 3 to September 4 (decisions November). Target says to come back in April 2027 for Cycle 1.
